Sea Change Preparatory Announces $20,000 in Scholarships Available for New Students

DEL MAR, CALIF.Sea Change Preparatory, a private micro-school located in Del Mar, announced today that it will be granting $20,000 in academic scholarships for new students in grades five through 12 to join the school in 2019. Small by design, Sea Change offers students a school experience best described as “transformative,” with an innovative approach and student achievements that have earned presidential accolades and national media attention.

One $10,000 scholarship and two $5,000 scholarships will be granted for students interested in joining the fully WASC-accredited school, which combines proven academics, inspiring physical fitness (in the form of ocean swimming), integrated mindfulness, travel and the arts for a highly personalized and enriching educational experience. [See scholarship details below.]

As its name suggests, Sea Change takes an innovative approach to education, with a unique location steps from the beach and an incredible four-to-one student-teacher ratio that challenges each student academically, creatively, physically and emotionally. Recent graduate acceptances include Berkeley, Michigan, Colby College, UCLA, UCSD, Boston University, NYU Tisch Film School, Purdue (Engineering), Ohio State and many others.

“We like to think of Sea Change as a classroom without walls, where we instill a passion for learning and personal growth that extends beyond the pages of a book or the edges of a screen,” said Co-Founder and Director of Mindfulness, John Allcock. “The integration of mindfulness and ocean swimming into our curriculum is incredibly powerful. Our students are able to discover their unique strengths and experience personal transformations in a way that is not possible in a traditional school environment.”

Sea Change’s “Zombie Patrol” swim team recently earned its fifth world record in open-ocean swimming, with a 15-mile relay swim to the Santa Barbara oil rig in October. That swim following closely on the heels of another world record the team set in June, which involved a first-ever swim between the islands of Ischia and Di Santo Stefano, off the coast of Italy. This achievement earned them a cover story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Sea Change recently secured a coveted slot to swim a relay across the English Channel in July 2019. This will be the second time that the Zombies team will complete this grueling, 21-mile course. The Zombies first competed in the English Channel swim in 2015, earning the students local and national media attention, including NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, as well as a letter of commendation from President Barack Obama.

Training is now underway for the 2019 English Channel swim, with newly enrolled students (ages 14+) eligible to join the team for this exciting, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. All skill levels are welcome, and no previous ocean swimming experience is required. (Note: In order to participate in the English Channel event, swimmers will need to demonstrate an appropriate level of swim proficiency to ensure their safety.)

The Zombies Swim Team is coached by Dan Simonelli, an accomplished ocean swimmer who has successfully completed a solo English Channel swim himself. Sea Change was able to earn the slot for the English Channel relay through the school’s ongoing relationship with International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Swimmer Chloe McCardel.

Scholarships are available for new students only. The scholarships are applicable towards one year of tuition fees at Sea Change Prep and will be prorated for mid-year transfer students wishing to attend the Spring 2019 semester. Students may also apply now for the 2019-2020 school year.
